Start: very fast from sleep mode. I timed the first page out in about 19 seconds after I hit the print button. To my surprise brother DCP7040 wakes actually fast enough to be turned off completely (switch on the right).The time to be switched on the first page (had print jobs waiting) was 33 seconds.

Printing: Quick with good quality. Makes about as much noise as you expect, certainly not enough to be annoying. On the toner save mode printing is quite light, but still easy to read. I printed a few full page pictures, which went pretty well. The pages come out slightly curly, but not enough to bother me at all.

Scan: exceeded my expectations. I have not had the problems other commentators mentioned about the scan quality.I scanned in some 4 x 6 photos and explodes in full screen on my 21 inch monitor, the quality was good. A 4 x 6 They look perfect, and about the quality of 4x magnification is still acceptable (some visible pixelation and some gaps in the original). Most of my scanning needs documents, and this printer handles quickly and flawlessly. I love being able to scan multiple pages using the document feeder.
